Consortia

By the term PURCHASING CONSORTIA we mean a temporary aggregation of Institutions and/or Research Centers interested in accessing to the same electronic resource (database or full text journal)
Aim of such “aggregation” is to offer to the Institution that are part of these consortia, a considerable save on the costs of subscriptions and on the administrative and technical expenses and management.
DEA’s effort in promoting these systems was born from the will of introducing into the market, editorial products that are extremely valuable for research and update but to-date limited to only few institutions due to their high costs.
DEA MediaGroup SpA has been the first company distributing international publications to believe in the PURCHASING CONSORTIA as a tool to spread high level e-resources.
The activity DEA e-media department, born in 1986 aimed to the promotion of CD-Rom diffusion, since 1993 has been especially concentrating on the promotion and realization of small and big purchasing consortia.
During the last years, thanks to the development of new technologies and of that extraordinary communication tool that is “Internet”, we have assisted to an increase in the number of consortia and of the products available.
To create a PURCHASING CONSORTIUM you need to have relationships with three important actors:
  • The Information Provider (data supplier)
  • The Technologies Provider (who supplies technical and informatics skills to allow to research into the information provider’s database and its share on the net)
  • The Research Institution/Centre, who, joining other similar institutions, constitutes a “group” to purchase or subscribe one or more specific e-resources.
  • Each consortium requires a common interest of the research centres and the cooperation among these three actors, giving, as a result, the following advantages:
  • Economic (gaining access to an e-publications at lower prices than the list prices, is to say with a discount from 20% to 60%)
  • Administrative (an easiest and faster administrative management of renewals)
  • Technical (as the database and its access are managed directly by Technologies Provider directly)
