1IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite

The IEEE Xplore AI Research Suite brings new AI-powered features that make research on the IEEE Xplore platform better and more efficient. It helps users find and access scientific and technical content published by IEEE and by leading international STEM publishers, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, the American Chemical Society and IOP Publishing, so they can understand articles faster and gain new knowledge.

With advanced search tools, users can ask questions in natural language, get relevant results and read accurate summaries of the content. These features cut research time, make it easier to explore the scientific literature and help users grasp new concepts.

The suite is available as an optional upgrade to the IEEE Xplore IEL Online subscription.

What it offers

Time and understanding
Find new insights faster: the IEEE AI overview and AI-generated article summaries let you get into a topic straight away.
Trusted content
It is the only AI research assistant that draws on both the full text and the metadata of IEEE peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, with an engine optimised for IEEE content.
Broad coverage
AI search also covers a wide, expert-curated selection of STEM metadata from journal articles and conference proceedings.
Verifiable results
AI overviews cite their source documents, so every answer can be checked in seconds. The model draws facts only from the text provided, to minimise the risk of hallucinations.
Intuitive interface
Free-form natural-language queries and smart keyword suggestions to refine your search.

The tools in the suite

Powered by IEEE Xplore AI

IEEE Research Navigator

An advanced search tool for journal articles and conference papers published by IEEE, plus a database of other STEM publishers, all in one place.

  • One interface for natural-language questions or text strings
  • Search that understands the meaning and intent of your questions
  • AI overviews of the results, with links to the sources
  • AI-generated article summaries

IEEE Reading Lens

An enhanced article view that helps researchers learn new concepts quickly and effectively, without leaving the text.

  • Identifies and highlights key terms
  • Gives in-context definitions of each term
  • Lets you add notes and tags directly while reading

2IEEE Data Licensing and Artificial Intelligence

Licences for IEEE Xplore data (Xplore Data Licensing)

IEEE Xplore data licensing includes several solutions, which differ in how the data is accessed, what it is used for and whether artificial intelligence is involved. Customers can license metadata only (bibliographic record, abstract and keywords) or metadata with full text for nearly 7 million IEEE journal, magazine and conference articles, plus the roughly 250,000 articles added every year.

The main solutions

No AI

Xplore Data Licensing

The new product type designed for most data licensing use cases, commercial and academic, with multiple delivery methods, provided that the use does not involve any form of artificial intelligence.

It is the licence for Text and Data Mining (TDM): text analysis, keyword extraction, document clustering, topic modelling.

With AI

Large Language Model (LLM) licences

For organisations that want to use IEEE data in large language models, for external use (public or commercial) or internal use restricted to authorised users.

  • RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): the system retrieves IEEE documents and generates answers without changing the model
  • Trained models: IEEE data is used to specialise a pre-trained model (Transfer Learning)
AI allowed

IEEE Xplore Metadata API

A subscription to query the IEEE APIs every day and retrieve bibliographic metadata. IEEE offers metadata-only APIs and APIs that also give access to the full text of publications.

These tools can also be used in projects that involve artificial intelligence.

TDM, RAG and Transfer Learning compared

The three AI approaches covered by IEEE licences have different purposes and mechanisms. The choice depends on the goal: analysing data (TDM), generating informed answers (RAG) or building a specialised model (Transfer Learning).
